Fortunately their arguments were listened to and we find ourselves today with a global meteorological satellite system that is indispensable to worldwide meteorology, climate monitoring and other related sciences. Europe, through EUMETSAT, is one of the world's leaders in the provision of such services, acting as an equal partner alongside other major players like the USA.

We started with a vision and implemented decisions through European cooperation, but would have achieved nothing without the skill and dedication of the staff and supporting contractors. Many of these experts have come from different parts of Europe, often uprooting families to live in a foreign country with a different language and customs. There is an active spirit of cooperation within the EUMETSAT staff with not only a desire to push back the boundaries of science but also a strong desire to be "European". It is this unique combination of vision, cooperation and expertise that has made EUMETSAT into the Organisation we have today. A glimpse of the past given in this book gives the reader encouragement that the future is bright for European satellite meteorology.
