Whilst the Space Station concept grew in strength during 1985 and the first half of 1986, work on defining a meteorological mission from polar orbit continued at IPOMS meetings. IPOMS established the principles for overall system configuration as well as general data and observational requirements, the optimum orbital parameters (minimum altitude 824 km, equator crossing times of 09.00h and 14.00h), data management and data availability.

A few months later, EUMETSAT came into existence.
