An illustration by Helen Gavaghan

A SMILE | PUBLISHER
The question of what is needed by the brain's structure and chemistry, and by its connection to the body, when prompted to smile, is what lies behind this illustration.

This is someone seated and looking at the view in front of them (to the left of the central line as you look at this image). Behind the seated person (to the right of the central line), is the human brain in the action of harmonising itself to smile. The colours and shapes in my mind represent a positive experience.

In some way, which I cannot fully articulate, the whole image is inspired by a piece of artwork by Pavel Buchler, which I saw in Leeds City Art Gallery. That work was called eclipse.

Observation, emotion, neurology,sensation, interpretation.
