I had intended this item to be based on a paper in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, "Reciprocal intronic and exonic histone modification regions in humans". The paper has not defeated me. I am still thinking about it, and from time to time circle this paper, viewing it physically as I might a coiled cobra. In lieu of my unwritten text extracting essentials from this paper I offer NSMB my keywords of their work and an illustration I created when I was thinking in another context about where computing might go as it moves toward consciousness. Musings of a science writer: Carbon is a single minded molecule with a penchant for symmetrical relationships. When alone with others of its species it orders itself demurely, tidily, sometimes elegantly, often expensively. In combination it is a shape shifter. Is pongy or intrusive. It threads its way through water, plants, air and animals. Its names are longer than a Spanish grandees. It gives warmth, structure, danger and sustenence to life. So why did this molecule defeat me temporarily when I was 20? Because I had not thought about transition elements nor applied my thinking to wave functions in biology. HG. |
