My friend and my then partner, Mark Smith, took this photograph in the early 1980s as one of a series for an application I made to be a presenter with Channel 4. They invited me to interview, and I was asked to improvise to camera. I completely fluffed my screen test. Before I could try again I got a job at New Scientist. In those days, after leaving University I was a smoker. Eventually in 1995 I gave up, and it was one of the hardest fights of my life. But I won! In 2004 I learned I really had kicked the habit for good.
