ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATIONS
by journalist and science and tech. writer, editor and author, Helen Gavaghan.
These illustrations are miniaturised versions of original work inspired by my interpretation of science, tech. and math concepts. The originals are 848 x 500 pixels and show more detail than the miniatures. They owe thanks to artists and poets whose apprehension and presentation of the world has helped me to understand ever-changing concepts of math, science and technology. The work is not free.

As a publisher I oppose censorship, but wish to balance public access to knowledge via institutions such as the British Library, museums and open-access publishing, using different models (none are without cost), with finding ways to prevent science and tech. from unwittingly undermining efforts by creative individuals and groups to sell their work.
My work above was created using the software package, Paint, within a frame of 848 x 500 pixels
working on a 17" flat-screen and displaying the work whilst working in
Internet Explorer incorporated into Windows XP.

The moral rights and copyright of the above illustrations (Series 1) presented above in miniaturised form belongs to Helen Gavaghan (HG). I asssert the moral rights and copyright in all formats here and in the source code above for each image. The images are for sale as runs of 30 electronic reproductions per full-size image (848 x 500 pixels in the software package, Paint). The current copyright holder, Helen Gavaghan, will make no further runs available for sale. The copyright for the electronic images (HG) and their source code is not for sale.
Helen Gavaghan, the creator of the work and copyright holder, reserves to herself the right to exploit the copyright in printed form to make money directly from the image. The print copyright is for sale.
If you want to use one of the above miniatures as a full size electronic image for personal or educational use off line please contact the copyright holder so that a copy can be made available to you as a read-only image on CD for the cost of post and packaging only. You would then be able to copy the image for offline, non commercial or non money making purposes. I will not keep your details for sales purposes unless you opt to ask me to keep your details so that I may inform you of other publications from GavaghanCommunications. If you wish to use the image I send you for personal, non commercial use off line (ie not making money directly from the image) and not undermining the value of the image and do not want to seek consent from me, the copyright holder, please respect the copyright, acknowledge the copyright in all forms of distribution of the image in any format and do no tamper with the souce code in a way that interferes with the code's intent.
Each reproduction costs £25. By opening one of the above images and expanding it to 848 x 500 pixels you get a sense of how the image looks, but not of its detail. If you wish to discuss seeing a full-size clear copy prior to purchase that can be arranged. Two out of each run is reserved for charities registered in the UK at no cost to the charity. First come, first served, and no editorial restrictions. The price for academics or educational establishments is £16.60. Purchasers (or guests in the case of charities) will receive the image in electronic format and on a CD. The invoice number and buyer's name will be incorporated in the image source code sent to the buyer. For exclusive, non-personal, online use and in print of the image, excluding that of the copyright holder to print the image in isolation specifically for money making, buyers may buy all of the reproductions excluding the two that that are reserved for charities registered in the UK. The purchaser has no control over which charity may appear alongside a particular piece of work.
The images at any size are not free for online use and may not be printed for anything but personal use.
At no extra cost purchasers of a full-size image may have their names or company or branch names listed here in the panel below the terms and conditions but no link to their website. Businesses may also, at no additional charge, have a few lines of text added here with their contact details if they wish and on the page on this site of the original created work. There is no clear guarantee as to how long this webpage will exist, but in all reasonable forseeable circumstances I have every intention of keeping it live. If you wish me to change the content of your few lines of text (no more than three lines) on this page you could do so once a year at no extra charge to youself.
The copyright holder (Helen Gavaghan, trading as GavaghanCommunications and self employed since 1991) wants no control over how purchasers use their full-size image (848 x 500) or part of the image on line, on their own website, or in print form in their promotional material or in a printed form that is not seeking to make commercial gain from the image alone or by selling the image in printed form. The copyright holder seeks no control over whether the image is cropped or resized, but would be grateful if such changes could be noted in captions. Please acknowledge copyright in all use.
The purchaser may also, at no extra cost to themselves, elect to have their name listed discretely in any future printing that the copyright holder (Helen Gavaghan, trading also as GavaghanCommunications) causes to be made of the images. If you wish to have your name listed if the image is printed as, say, a card, you would have to cede control over the printing and would have no right to know anything in advance about the printing. Unless you are one of the guest charities, in which case you would be asked in advance if you wished your name printed on a specific product.

She has lived and worked in the UK and in the US, in Washington DC. She went freelance in 1991 and has contributed to international publications as diverse as the French weekly for
GPs, Le Journale Internationale de Medecine, for which she was US correspondent, Nature, where she was biomedical research policy correspondent in
Washington DC on retainer and New Scientist, where she was on staff for seven years (1984 - 1991). She wrote despatches and provided interviews for the BBC World
Service in Washington DC. She won an Alfred P.Sloan Foundation Fellowship for $125,000 with which she researched and wrote her first book, Something New Under the Sun, Satellites
and the Beginning of the Space Age, published in New York by Copernicus (1998), an imprint of Springer-Verlag. MIT short listed and interviewed her for a Knight Fellowship in science
journalism, and the UK National Endowment for Science Technolgy and the Arts (NESTA) shortlisted and interviewed her in 2002 in partnership with the Centre for the History of
Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM) at the University of Manchester for a £40 000 award. Though she did not win these awards the process of application and interview
was invaluable. She won a pan European competition of invited bids to write a History of Eumetsat (published 2001).
In May 2005 she founded the website www.gavaghancommunications.com and in September 2005 founded what has become Science, People & Politics ISSN 1751-598X.
The magazine is a trienniel series building in bimonthly HTML issues. She founded its non-trading, owning company, Science, People and Politics Ltd., in 2006.
She has a BSc (hons) in biophysics from the University of Leeds (1980), and, for personal reasons, in March 2004 interrupted her transfer from M.Phil to Ph.D at the CHSTM, University
of Manchester where she was researching and contextualising the work of Sydney Chapman and Lloyd Berkner and their role in the International Geophysical Year of 1957-
1958.
In addition to her current role as publisher and editor of the bimonthly magazine, Science, People & Politics and Finance Director of Science, People and Politics Ltd. she is a
sole trader offering science and technology editorial services. But in these challenging economic times she will undertake any paying work that does not compromise the work she has
done since 1980.
She is a member of the UK's NUJ (63622) and publisher and editor of Science, People & Politics
